Dependability in Grids

چکیده

This description seems like it could apply to any traditional distributed system. However, a key difference is that many Grids will provide services that are orchestrations of multiple services, hosted on different sites and across organizational and administrative boundaries, thus raising a lot of new issues. The Globus Toolkit currently at version 4 is the accepted reference implementation for Grid-computing middleware, while Global Grid Forum members work on Grid-computing standards. But, our concern in this article is the last point in Foster's checklist. For all the work being done to provide usable Grid middleware, the subject of dependability has been strangely neglected. The community hasn't launched a large-scale effort to provide tools to help develop dependable Grid applications.

The Development of Dependable and Survivable Grids

Grids should not just be facilitating advances in science and engineering; rather they should also be making an impact on our daily lives by enabling sophisticated applications such as new consumer services and support for homeland defense. This is not possible today because the poor grid dependability—which is tolerated by scientific users—would be unacceptable in critical infrastructure appli...

An Overview of Existing Tools for Fault-Injection and Dependability Benchmarking in Grids

In this paper we review several existing tools for fault injection and dependability benchmarking in grids. We emphasis on the FAIL-FCI fault-injection software that has been developed in INRIA Grand Large, and a benchmark tool called QUAKE that has been developed in the University of Coimbra. We present the state-of-the-art and we explain the importance of these tools for dependability assessm...

Towards Dependable Grids

To date, grids (a form of distributed system) have been used to aggregate resources for performance-starved applications typically resulting from scientific enquiry. Grids should not just be facilitating advances in science and engineering; rather they should also be making an impact on our daily lives by enabling sophisticated applications such as new consumer services and support for homeland...

Programming for Dependability in a Service-based Grid

Service-based Grid infrastructures emphasize service composition rather than sharing of low level resources. The idea is to build Grid applications out of computational services provided by the different sites of the Grid. Recent developments in the area of Web services have strengthened this idea by standardizing procedures like service description, publication and invocation. What is still mi...

UK-Sino Collaborations: Increasing Dependability in Grids

Dependability is a key factor in any software system and has been made a core aim of the Globus based China Research Environment over Wide-area Network (CROWN) middleware. Our past research based around our Fault Injection Technology (FIT) framework has demonstrated that Network Level Injection can be a valuable tool in assessing the dependability of SOAP based middleware. This paper details ou...
